spare the air
non-profit / packaging

I chose to create a multipack for Spare the Air, which is a nonprofit organization that focuses on air quality in the San Francisco Bay Area. Because the organization’s goal is to reduce emissions, I used materials that have a small carbon footprint and selected items that would encourage people to take action.

I decided a cylindrical package would be the best solution; the shape mirrors the circular shape of their logo, in addition to resembling the wheels of bikes, scooters, skateboards, and other eco-friendly commute options. To accentuate the idea of clean air, I went with a very clean aesthetic and stuck with the simple blue and white color palette that represents sky and clouds.

The items included in the multipack are: a terracotta pot with a packet of snake plant seeds, a tote bag, a $5 Clipper card (for public transit), and a pocket-sized map of the best bike routes in San Francisco. The box itself has an illustration of each type of eco-friendly transit in San Francisco. The bike route map lists the 4 main benefits of a “clean air commute,” in addition to offering two different types of bike maps to encourage people to try biking their commute. The packet of seeds promotes growing indoor plants to improve indoor air quality and the QR code and website on the back of the seed packet encourages people to make donations to Spare the Air. The reloadable Clipper card can be used on any type of public transit in San Francisco and many throughout the Bay Area. In addition to serving as an sustainable alternative to plastic grocery bags, the tote bag also serves as an “advertisement” to raise awareness for Spare the Air; it has a large logo in the center, with the Air Quality Index color-coded scale along the top. (I also added expressive color-coded emojis under each color to add some context for those that are not familiar with the Air Quality Index colors.) Each of the items is intended to raise the person’s awareness about emissions’ impact on air quality and urge them to take action.
