Located in the heart of Appalachian Virginia, Wise Baptist Church’s mission is to offer hope to a community facing tremendous hardships (poverty, opioids, suicide). The color palette was partially inspired by Virginia’s natural environment (mountains, vegetation, sunshine) and partially by the colors in the striped “Appalachian flag” (red, gold, purple, green). As a nod to the area’s coal mining history, the dot of the “i” is an abstraction of a coal miner’s headlamp; this also serves as a metaphor for the church’s role in the community—lighting the way for others in a world of darkness. The five rays represent the five towns that make up Wise County and the five states that are visible from a lookout point in Wise (Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee).
